Our Pricing and Commitment to Quality

The typical price for one of our puppies ranges from $2500 to $5000, with young adults priced lower and retired dogs are free other than committing to a spay or neuter cost. Pricing is directly related to costs incurred and comparisons with other reputable show breeders (like real estate comps). Occasionally we get inquiries about why our prices are higher, with comments suggesting that we must be making a large profit. However, the reality is quite the opposite: we actually don't come close to covering our expenses, let alone making a profit, from puppy sales.

Chihuahuas typically have small litters, many of which require C-sections, and we put immense effort into ensuring that each puppy is healthy, well-socialized, and properly pre-trained. Our breeding dogs are carefully chosen for their lineage and health-tested for conditions like patellas, hearts, and eyes, through OFA and extensive DNA testing for disease carrier status via Embark or Wisdom panel or other misc. tests.

The costs involved in breeding, from health testing and showing to veterinary care and other costs far exceed the price we receive for the puppies. While we don’t make money from this endeavor, it is driven by our passion for Chihuahuas. If we lowered our prices, we'd have to compromise on essential areas such as health testing, showing our dogs, nutrition, vet care, socialization, training and more.  This is simply not something we’re willing to do.

Why Show Breeding Matters

Breeding for show ensures that the dogs conform to the breed standard. If you want a Chihuahua that has a classic apple-shaped head, large eyes, and a compact frame under 6 lbs, a show breeder is your best choice. Show breeders also prioritize temperament—shy or aggressive dogs won’t succeed in the show ring. Puppies from show breeders receive significant attention, ensuring they are well-socialized and ready to thrive as pets. The purpose of showing is to prove that your breeding stock is within the proper AKC standards.  It costs between $1000-$5000 each dog to show with entry costs, handler fees, travel fees and more. Only the dogs meeting or exceeding the standards receive a CH title (champion) or GCH (grand champion)  Only the best of the best receive these titles.

Conversely, Chihuahuas from pet stores or non-show breeders often are not as attractive. They are also harder to house train, often displaying the stereotypical "yappy" behavior due to lack of proper socialization and early training. See link above "I just want a pet"

Our Commitment to Health Testing

We are dedicated to providing healthy, well-bred puppies, which is why we invest in comprehensive health testing. Many breeders skip these tests because they are costly, but for us, it's essential. Health exams for patellas, hearts, and eyes, along with the necessary paperwork submissions to organizations like OFA and cost nearly $600 per dog. DNA testing costs an additional $150-200. With a breeding program that involves multiple dogs, this adds up quickly.

Veterinary Costs

Breeding also incurs significant veterinary expenses. C-sections, especially those done at emergency clinics, can cost $3000 or more, and additional costs for ultrasounds, tests, and general veterinary care are common.  To maintain our current dogs, last year we spent over $26,000 with our vet.

Why Some Breeders Charge Less

Breeders who don’t prioritize showing, health testing, or proper veterinary care can afford to sell puppies at much lower prices. These breeders may cut corners on health care, socialization, and proper nutrition. However, puppies from these sources might not conform to breed standards, may have health or temperament issues, and may not come with any long-term support from the breeder.

If you're looking for a well-bred, healthy Chihuahua that fits the breed standard and comes with a lifetime of support, the initial investment may be higher, but it’s worth it in the long run. You'll avoid potential health issues, save on vet bills, and have a happy, well-adjusted dog.
